The University of Cambridge's new chancellor
Available for over a year
The University of Cambridge has a new chancellor. Chris Smith, Lord Smith of Finsbury, was previously the culture secretary in Tony Blair’s Labour government. Often described as a pioneer for being the first openly gay MP, he went on to be chairman of the Environment Agency and the Advertising Standards Authority. For the last decade Lord Smith has been master of Pembroke College in Cambridge, where five decades ago he took his PhD. He is now chancellor of the University, a largely ceremonial position, at a time when universities are very challenged. The Â鶹Éç's Amol Rajan spoke to Lord Smith. (Picture credit: PA)
