Who's painted a flag on a roundabout?
Available for over a year
The red and white cross of St. George has appeared on a small roundabout in Bromsgrove, in a display of apparent patriotism that has divided opinion. Three roundabouts have been painted over, with the English flag attached to a number of street lamps. Videos showing the paintings have gathered thousands of comments on TikTok. Flags have also been erected to several street lamps in Wythall. It follows the removal by Birmingham City Council of several banners and flags from streeet furniture there, which the authority said was down to concerns over health and safety, and the need to access the lamps for maintenance work. Tom Edwards reports. In a statement, Worcestershire County Council said: "Lamp columns on the highway should not have anything attached to them, unless agreed by the council. This to ensure that work can be carried out as quickly and safely as possible to the columns, that no damage is caused which could cost money to repair, that visibility isn鈥檛 effected and no electrical hazards are caused. Those attaching anything to lamp columns could also be putting their own lives at risk, as well as those of passers-by and motorists. All road markings on the county鈥檚 highway network are strictly regulated for safety, including those on roundabouts of any size. Changes to agreed road markings must not be made other than by approved contractors, in line with these regulations. Unofficial actions on the highway network could be distracting or cause confusion to some road users so will therefore be removed."
