TRANSLATION: The Lost Gardens of Heligan unveiled Lowarnes - Cornish for vixen - which was made from the wood of a 150-year-old Cornish Red rhododendron. Staff from Heligan helped hand-split 600 pieces of wood for the fox's fur, under the direction of Cornish brother and sister artists Sue and Pete Hill and Hal Silvester. A spokesman for Heligan said "As the sculpture ages, the wood will fade to a lighter, more silvery tone reflecting what happens to vixens' fur after they have become mothers". Ms Hill said a photograph of a fox taken on the Heligan estate by Andy Wilson was the artists' "core inspiration". TRANSLATION Cornwall Council is consulting on how to enhance the safety and accessibility of the more than 4,500km of footpaths, by-ways, and bridleways it oversees. The West Cornwall Footpath Preservation Society walking group warned hundreds of signs showing rights of way were currently missing and that overgrown or blocked paths deterred people from walking. According to the council the consultation would help it decide where best to target its resources to encourage more people to walk and potentially boost health and well-being. Members of the West Cornwall Footpath Preservation Society take part in walks in the local countryside and help to clear paths and obstacles to open routes. TRANSLATION Using underwater cameras the University of Exeter researchers found "vibrant marine life", including sharks, lobsters, octopuses, and bluefin tuna. A spokesman said: "Despite widespread damage of UK seas from destructive fishing, pollution, and climate change, the waters surrounding the Isles of Scilly appear to be bucking the trend." Relatively low-cost camera systems could be used to improve the monitoring and effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas. These camera systems allow researchers to track changes in species diversity and abundance over time, giving us vital evidence on whether conservation measures are working.
