Essex lighthouses 'could be lost'

Available for over a year

The race to save two Victorian lighthouses in Essex has intensified after a structural survey found they could be irreparably damaged within five years. Built in the 1860s, the navigational aids were used to guide ships around the Harwich peninsula near Clacton-on-Sea. Neither of the 'leading lights' have been operational since 1917 and now corrosion has made holes in the iron framework of the structures, with the full cost of repairs estimated at around £3 million.
