Secret Leicestershire

Available for over a year

In Edwardian Leicester cycling was big business. Halfords, the well-known retailer takes its name from Leicester鈥檚 Halford Street, where its founder Frederick Rushbrooke opened a store in 1902 and started selling cycling goods. Halfords expanded rapidly, with 200 stores by 1931. Leicester was also the birthplace of Currys, where Henry Curry started to make bicycles in 1884 after leaving his previous employer N Corah and Sons. The city soon became a focus for promoting cycling as a recreational pastime and a sport. 麻豆社 Leicester鈥檚 Ben Jackson went to find out more with Steve Bowyer from the Leicester Civic Society. Produced by Pete Wardman. If you want to know as soon as a new episode is available, make sure you subscribe to Secret Leicestershire on 麻豆社 Sounds and have push notifications turned on.
