Cornwall Council is seeking permission from the government to add Cornish place names to traffic signs in Cornwall. Councillor Dan Rogerson explained that traffic signs were bilingual in Wales and Scotland, but not yet in Cornwall. 鈥淐ornish has been recognised and given the same status as a language within the UK as Welsh and Scots Gaelic and there are things that flow from that鈥. He added that street nameplates were already bilingual, and that there would be no additional costs to the council if it were to use Cornish on other road signs. A spokesman for the Department of Transport replied, "We are committed to updating legislation about the design of road traffic signs and will consult on this." Translation 2/3 Prime Minister Andy Burnham has suggested that Cornwall could be given the right to charge a tourist tax as part of a devolution deal, and the leader of Cornwall Council Leigh Frost has said that the council should think seriously about doing so. Many millions of tourists come to Cornwall through the summer and, currently, make no contribution to local public services. So, if a reasonable charge were to be added to the price of accommodation, the money could be used to pay for those costs. However, owners of tourist businesses have warned that a new tax could deter tourists from visiting Cornwall and strangle the industry here. Councillor Frost believes that it would be useful for the council to have the right to charge the tax although there was no need to introduce it right away. Terebo nessa! Translation 3/3 A man from Saltash, Bob Brown, has crossed Australia on a scooter, which wasn鈥檛 even an electric one, to raise money for three charities. He hopes that his adventure will be recorded in the Guinness Book of Records because he completed the trip, from Perth to Sydney, faster that anyone else in the world. All together, he travelled 2,800 miles and raised about 拢5,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support, St Luke鈥檚 Hospice and Children鈥檚 Hospice South West. This is not the first time that he has done something similar. In 2001, he became the first Briton to run across Australia and, two years later, he did the same thing on a bike. And that鈥檚 all from me for this week. Until next time! Presenter This week鈥檚 An Nowodhow was written and presented by Steve Penhaligon and edited by Steve Harris.
