Cornwall Council has proposed using parking meters as part of a new system to 鈥渉elp manage parking and traffic movement鈥 in Truro city centre. However, some residents are worried that drivers may park in residential areas to avoid the new charges. Also, city councillors have said that Truro鈥檚 historic granite setts would be damaged or removed if parking meters were installed. At the moment, people can park for free for a limited period in some streets near the city centre. But, under the new plan, it would be necessary to find a parking space and then reserve it online. Money would not be accepted by the meters. So, people without a smart phone would be unable to use the new system. Cornwall Council will consider the public鈥檚 feedback before deciding how to proceed. Translation 2/3 A project to improve and enhance the Malakoff viewpoint in St Ives has been completed. The work was done with government funding as part of the St Ives Town Deal. The viewpoint has been enhanced with new granite paving, plants and illuminated benches. The famous sculpture by Barbara Hepworth, Epidauros II, has been put back in place, as has the historic mill wheel. One important aim of the project was to encourage cycling and the use of public transport. So, a new bus shelter and bike stand have been installed. Project leader, Kieren Couch, said that many of the materials and equipment were custom-made by local craftspeople, and added, "The Malakoff 鈥 now provides a welcoming, high-quality public space that supports the significance, character and charm of St Ives." Ha henn yw oll ahanav vy an seythen ma. Terebo nessa! Translation 3/3 Sterts Theatre, a community theatre based in Liskeard, has announced that it is bankrupt and will be liquidated. The Sterts board said that they had made the 鈥渄ifficult decision鈥 to close the theatre because this was an 鈥渆xceptionally challenging time for cultural and arts organisations鈥. Sterts was founded in 1986 and, three years ago, it received more than 拢1 million from Cornwall Council to repair and improve the theatre, after it was damaged by storms and hot weather. Former trustee of the theatre, Ali Fenn, said that she was 鈥渧ery saddened鈥 by the decision, adding that the theatre had been a 鈥渇antastic asset in south east Cornwall鈥 for young people. And that鈥檚 all from me for this week. Until next time! This week鈥檚 An Nowodhow was written and presented by Steve Penhaligon and edited by Steve Harris.
