Early results in India's general election suggest the governing coalition of the BJP and its allies, led by the prime minister Narendra Modi, are heading for a comfortable majority. Pressure has intensified for the British Prime Minister Theresa May to step down, following the resignation of a key cabinet minister, Andrea Leadsom, over the government's approach to Brexit. The United Nations General Assembly has backed a resolution demanding Britain give back control of the Chagos islands in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius within six months. The non-binding vote saw a -hundred and sixteen countries support the resolution, with only six against.
