Salle first appeared on This Is Africa back in 2023, when her debut single Icon was doing amazing things. She embodied the Afrobeats fairytale, a video of her singing in her mum’s local diner going viral and getting the attention of none other than Don Jazzy, one of the most influential figures in the industry. But as she tells DJ Edu, the journey from that video, which was filmed when she was 17, to now, when at 21 she has released her debut EP, has been a rocky one. The EP’s title - Only Sad People Smile - is telling. Salle struggled emotionally with the new reality and the pressure she felt to live up to expectations. Fortunately, she was able to turn her very personal experiences into songs which resonate with young people, and she is very clear that there needs to be more openness about mental health in Africa.
