How would you respond if you woke up in a foreign hospital and found out that during a few, drug-induced hours, your world had been tipped upside down and life would never be the same again? When I first spoke to Dan Hopwood, all of these questions were flying around my mind. I simply couldn't fathom how a 24 year old, super-active, member of the Paratroop Regiment could mentally recover from a scooter-crash that was to paralyse him from the neck down and nearly cost him his life.

But Dan is a born fighter, a true soldier, and doesn't know the meaning of giving up. I speak to him 4 years on about how he has coped with such dramatic changes to his life, how he manages his disability and how his love for a new sport, Outrigger Canoeing, has got him grinning from ear to ear.
