At
the top of a huge prefabricated unit, Swan Hunter employees are
welding a gun turret in place.
The
unit is the accomodation and navigation block for a Royal Navy ship,
and the gun turret is one of the few defensive parts of the ship
being constructed at Port Clarence.
The
bulk of the work is putting in place accomodation units for the
crew, and making the bridge from which the ship will be controlled.
You
might think that the bridge of a Navy ship would be constructed
of extra-thick steel, but actually the opposite is true.
The
bridge is constructed in thin steel so that missiles will pass straight
through without detonating.
