Review: The Subways

The Subways return to their hometown as part of Red Stripe's 'Bring It On Back' series.

Band: The Subways (supported by The Culprits)

Date: 22/02/08

Venue: The Green Room, Welwyn Garden City

As the fans and friends of both bands pour into the 150 person capacity venue, The Subways sit backstage eager to start the show.听Billy Lunn (Guitar, Lead Vocals) paces backstage with a cheeky grin spread across his face showing his eagerness to give the followers what they want.

First to strike the historic local music haven that is The Green Room are young band The Culprits. An alternative Indie band with lots to prove.

In front of such a devoted crowd many bands would have simply flopped on this occasion.听However, with a mix of powerful drumming, intricate lead guitar riffs and slightly harsh vocals this is a band to look out for in the near future.听The foot tapping bass line on 鈥淢oving On鈥 proved to get the crowd going and managed to show everyone just why The Culprits were chosen in this slot.

A few moments past 10:00pm and no individual could wait any longer.听With Jingles (the 70-year-old security guard and 鈥淭he Subways biggest fan鈥) trying his best to prevent fans from entering backstage it was time to give the people what they wanted.

Roars from the floors are heard as the band enters the stage looking as confident as ever.听They know how good they are, and the best part is, they deserve to.

To say the charisma pouring out from Billy, Charlotte and Josh tonight was immense is a huge understatement.听Tonight, they not only own the stage, they own the world.

Billy delivers a physical performance seen before by such characters as Kurt Cobain and Jack white. Josh鈥檚 long soaked hair throws sweat across the stage as he smashes the drum skins with supremacy.

Charlotte looking gorgeous as ever is a truly underestimated musician.听The blonde bassist shows her four-string skill when ferociously head banging on some of the more complicated bass lines resembling fellow performers including the great Chris Wolstenholme.

Songs like 鈥淲ith You鈥 were performed with sheer passion whilst the fantastically youthful shout-a-long tune that is 鈥淢ary鈥 went down a treat. New songs including 鈥淕irls and Boys鈥 are sure to be a hit.听

With the new material played tonight, I have a feeling the new album will be a big success. It was a pleasure witnessing such an enthusiastic and exciting performance from such a talented and electrifying band.
