LOOKING FOR ASHLEY
By Katy
When Katy went on a school trip to Thiepval in France she found the name of a long lost relative engraved on a First World War memorial.

Katy didn’t know very much about Second Lieutenant Ashley McGain except that he lived on the Isle of Mann. But she does have a copy of the last letter he wrote home to his mother a few days before being killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Her teacher read this letter out to Katy and her classmates during their tour of French and Belgium battlefields.
