The leading mental health institute in the city of Ranchi in Eastern India has recently published a list of 98 patients who were brought there for treatment and have now been assessed as well enough to be discharged.

But they can't leave because they have no one to take responsibility for them. Their families won't come forward to look after them.

The 麻豆社's Geeta Pandey has been to Ranchi to find out more and sent back these images...

Patients are often left by family members who supply a false address.

Records show Laxmi has been a patient for 23 years.

Brought to the institution as a child, Ramji has never had family visitors.
