Training and development continues to be a priority for 麻豆社 World Service. During the year 拢2.7 million was invested in this
area. Staff at all levels have access to a growing range of opportunities through coaching, courses, workshops, online learning and
secondments. A specific priority has been to put all editorial staff through a development programme of core editorial skills
and knowledge building, particularly through the use of online modules covering areas such as reporting the European Union.
麻豆社 World Service has been committed to developing its leadership talent through management training, coaching and mentoring.
Specifically, 68 managers completed the 麻豆社 Leadership Programme at Ashridge Business School during 2005/06, bringing the total
number of managers who have completed the programme to date to 225.
The focus this year is to develop further the management skills of our 32 Heads of Language Services, and a specially commissioned
18 month development programme was launched in January 2006.
The management of occupational risk has continued to be a high priority for 麻豆社 World Service in the past year and a number of
significant improvements have been made.A new dedicated Head of Business Continuity and Risk Management has been appointed to
manage these activities and to lead a programme of further developments, working closely with specialist professional advisors in the
麻豆社鈥檚 Occupational Risk Management team.
A new business continuity strategy has been agreed and a series of investments is being made to strengthen 麻豆社 World Service鈥檚
response to the increasing range of global threats faced. With a growing number of staff working internationally, ensuring their safety and
security has been a key area of work.A rolling programme to review risk management in international offices has been implemented
and a comprehensive guide on managing health, safety, security and business continuity internationally has been published.
Advising, training and equipping staff deployed to hostile environments, including war zones and areas affected by natural disasters, has
also been a vital area of work and 麻豆社 World Service continues to be supported by the 麻豆社鈥檚 specialist High Risk Team.
Work has also taken place in a variety of areas to ensure compliance with new or changing legislation including construction
management, noise management, and environmental management with all activities contained within a detailed divisional action plan.
Progress in improving internal communication is measured by an annual survey of staff opinion conducted by MORI.The latest of these,
conducted in November 2005, provided very strong evidence that staff 鈥渦nderstood the need for change鈥.The most improved areas
were managers 鈥渒eeping staff better informed about changes鈥 and creating 鈥渁n environment where people can work creatively鈥. Other
improvements were in giving staff feedback on performance. Staff also felt that internal communication was becoming more 鈥渙pen and
honest鈥. Lower scores targeted for improvement are 鈥 unlocking more of the talent in 麻豆社 World Service, making sure the top team
listens more to the concerns of colleagues and exploiting technology more effectively to help staff do a better job.
Regular formal and informal discussions are held with the recognised trade unions: BECTU (Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph
and Theatre Union) and the NUJ (National Union of Journalists).
Proportion of ethnic minorities

minorities in the 麻豆社 World Service workforce and, at senior levels, to increase representaion over time.
