2008 Woodwind Finalist - David Smith

Edinburgh student David Smith has reached the final five in the prestigious Âé¶¹Éç Young Musician of the Year which is being held at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff on Saturday and Sunday, May 10, 11.

A pupil of St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh, David is a member of the Edinburgh Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland plus he is an accomplished saxophonist.

Jennifer Rimer, Headteacher, St Mary's Music School, said: "David has won a place in the final through his exceptional natural ability combined with dedication to practice and rapid learning capacity. He is a charismatic and engaging performer who immediately arrests an audience's attention. Everybody at St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh, is delighted that David has been selected and wishes him all success."

David was revealed as one of the finalists on the first of five special Âé¶¹Éç Four programmes that are following the progress of contestants in each of the competition categories; woodwind, brass, percussions, keyboard and strings. The other four will be revealed over the coming four nights on Âé¶¹Éç Four.

One of the five musicians who compete in the final at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff on May 10, 11 will follow in the footsteps of past winners including Nicola Benedetti, Jennifer Pike, Emma Johnson and 2006 winner clarinetist Mark Simpson.
