Alfred Hinton originally trained as a painter and brought an artist's eye to his landscape compositions. He was a founder and leading member of the 'Linked Ring Brotherhood', a group formed to promote photography as a serious art form, and wrote extensively on the subject. Hinton also served as editor of 'Amateur Photographer' magazine for a number of years.
