Â鶹Éç Governors review: the challenge of impartiality in a changing world

"I think it is time to open up the debate about impartiality... to try to establish a broadly accepted understanding of what it means for the Â鶹Éç in the digital age…

"We know from all our research how important impartiality is to our licence fee payers. It's one of the Â鶹Éç assets on which they place great value. But we must not take it for granted. We have to ask ourselves: in this new world we are entering, do we have the right defences in place for the principle of impartiality?"

(Michael Grade, Goodman Lecture 2005)

This year the Â鶹Éç Governors and Â鶹Éç Management have commissioned a project to consider the implications of a changing world for the Â鶹Éç's delivery of impartiality. The project will seek to recommend:

  • A set of principles underlying impartiality in the 21st century.
  • A list of broadly identified implications for the Â鶹Éç.
The final report, Safeguarding impartiality in the 21st century, was published by the Â鶹Éç Trust in June 2007.
