|
Bingley's Five Rise Locks were built so that barges
on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal (opened in 1774) could
rise or fall around 60 feet - essential so that they
could continue their progress in this hilly landscape
in either direction.
A feat of engineering then, and still spectacular today
- we've managed to capture two barges making their watery
way up part of the locks at the same time!

The Five Rise Locks are still in daily operation, run

edge!
