This
is the inside of the chapel of St Mary the Virgin on
Wakefield Bridge which is usually only open to the public
during services.
This
was built as a chantry chapel in the fourteenth century.
People would establish chantries by bequest so priests
could be employed to pray for their souls after they
were dead.
It was not unusual for buildings to be built on bridges
in medieval times but it is very unusual for such buildings
to survive. Wakefield Bridge has been enlarged over
the years and St Mary the Virgin was extensively renovated
in 1848.
