In
November 2001, Spencer Stokes - Bradford's Reporter for Â鶹Éç Radio
Leeds - went out-and-about looking at the state of the textile industry
across the Bradford district...
Manningham
was once home to Europe's biggest mill complex. At its height, Lister's
employed 7000 men, women and children - manufacturing high-quality
textiles such as velvet and silk. Its central courtyard alone was
as big as a football field.
Lister's
finally closed towards the end of the 1980s and since then the Titanic-like
building has gone into a sad decline. The once proud courtyard is
now littered with broken masonry. Former worker Freda Watts and
local resident Joyce Bean look back to the days when the mill was
"completely alive."
But there is hope that there may be a new start ahead for the once-proud
mills...
