Shakespeare鈥檚 Falstaff describes himself as 鈥榓 goodly, portly man鈥� of a cheerful look, a pleasing eye and a most noble carriage鈥�, and Elgar paints a similarly vivid portrait of the man in his witty, stirring masterpiece. Gramophone wrote that when superb young Spanish pianist Javier Perianes plays Grieg鈥檚 ever-fresh Piano Concerto, as he does tonight, 鈥榶ou may well find yourself falling in love and in awe all over again鈥�. The concert opens with Wagner鈥檚 prelude to Tristan and Isolde 鈥� where, essentially, modern music began.
