When Europe鈥檚 greatest composers fled from war and tyranny, they rebuilt their careers in the USA 鈥� singing of hope, loss and defiance from the shores of a new world. Korngold鈥檚 Violin Concerto finds the spirit of Vienna in the Hollywood Hills, while Bart贸k created an epic display of courage, sorrow and life-affirming brilliance in his dazzling Concerto for Orchestra.

Korngold鈥檚 concerto, in particular, is a perfect showcase for the award-winning Spanish violinist Mar铆a Due帽as. 鈥淲ith her gorgeous sound 鈥� dense, warm and brilliant 鈥� and her immaculate technique, Due帽as is already at the top鈥� wrote Bachtrack, and it鈥檚 hard to imagine a lovelier upbeat to Bart贸k鈥檚 roof-raising orchestral spectacular: a personal favourite of 麻豆社 Symphony Orchestra chief conductor Sakari Oramo. The concert opens with Betsy Jolas鈥檚 鈥楲atest鈥�, a celebration of musical freedom written by the composer in her 90s and a striking testament to her eternal youth.
