Written in the wake of a failed affair, William Walton鈥檚 powerful First Symphony runs the emotional gamut 鈥 from heartbreak via contemplation to a profoundly optimistic ending. More than 80 years after its premiere, it鈥檚 now regarded as one of the great British symphonies. In the South, Elgar鈥檚 postcard from the Italian Riviera, opens the concert, before violinist Jennifer Pike joins Juanjo Mena and the orchestra for Sibelius鈥檚 Violin Concerto, which blends intense lyricism with technical virtuosity.
