- It’s not your screen - it’s the computer inside. Your TV picture might still be crystal clear. The issue is with the 'computer' that runs apps on the TV. This 'computer' can be part of the actual TV itself, the set top box (Virgin, Sky, Freeview), or a streaming stick plugged into the back of the TV. Over time, these little computers can’t always keep up with the latest updates and security improvements, which means we struggle to keep our apps working on them.
- We try to keep TV devices working as long as possible. We work closely with manufacturers to keep iPlayer running for many years. As iPlayer evolves over time, we do our best to make sure the apps still function as they should and often go to significant lengths to extend the use of devices.
- A last resort - we do not take the decision to remove support lightly - if support is removed, it’s because it’s no longer possible to keep things running smoothly. We only do this when there’s no other practical option.
Do I need to buy a new TV?
No! Nobody wants to throw away a good TV and for most people, the good news is you won’t need to. First, check if you already own something connected to the TV that can still play iPlayer, like:
- A Sky, Virgin, BT TV or Freesat box
- A games console (PlayStation or Xbox)
- A streaming device like Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV or Chromecast
- If you are using a set top box (Virgin, Sky, BT TV) -
- your TV itself might allow you to access iPlayer
- you could also contact the provider and see if they will provide you with a new set top box which is capable to using iPlayer
What should I buy if I need something new?
Sometimes you might need (or want) to buy something new. There are loads of options out there. The technology moves on very quickly so we cannot provide a definitive list of which device to pick.
- Consider a streaming stick. This is a low-cost approach if you want to keep your existing TV. A streaming stick plugs straight into your TV. This will allow you to keep using your current TV and gives you access to iPlayer and loads of other apps along with other accessibility benefits like screen readers or voice controls. A set top box is also a lower cost option, when compared to replacing a TV.
- Replacing your TV? If you are considering replacing your TV, there are loads of options out there. Please check prior to purchase that iPlayer is supported with either the retailer, or by checking our certified devices help page.

What if I’m worried about cost?
Money matters. We know buying new kit isn’t always easy. Streaming sticks are usually the cheapest option, followed by some set top boxes.
What if I’m worried about accessibility?
Change can be tricky, especially if you’re used to things working a certain way. Many modern devices now include helpful features like screen readers and voice controls that weren’t available before and can make using your device easier.
You can also often set up a streaming stick or set-top box to work with a single remote to avoid having to learn a second.
