Q10.

A carpet company is asked to quote for a new carpet to fit a room 10'6" by 14' using wool twill carpet at £4.99 per square metre with free fitting and underlay. What will they quote if they always work to the next metre up? 1 foot is appproximately 30.48cm.

Answer and commentary

To work out the total we need to work out the next full metre larger than 10'6" (that's 10 feet, 6 inches) and the same for 14' (that's 14 feet). The company can only use whole metres lengths and the excess will be left as offcuts.
10 feet is 10x30.48 = 304.8cm. 6 inches is half a foot so that's an extra 30.48 ÷ 2 = 15.24cm. A total of 320.04cm. That's over 3metres, so they will need 4 metres. 14 feet is 14x30.48 = 426.72cm. That's over 4 metres so they will need 5 metres. That's a total of 20 square metres at £4.99 = 20x4.99 = 99.80.
Answer: £99.80
