Q11.

An electricity company charges 4.8p per kilowatt hour of electricity. There is a monthly standing charge of £11.70. The table shows the usage pattern in a small office for the first quarter. Calculate their bill for this time.

Units used (kWh)
April 863
May 1052
June 927

Answer and commentary
The units are in kWh, which is kilowatt hour. So each unit costs 4.8p.
First add up the total units:
863 + 1052 +927 = 2842
Now multiply by 4.8p
2842 x 4.8 = 13641.6p
This is in pence and the answer will have to be in pounds, so convert:
13641.6p = £136.42 (to the nearest penny)
We also have to pay 3 monthly standing charges.
That's £11.70 x 3 = £35.10. So, the total bill is £35.10 + £136.42 = £171.52

Answer: £171.52
