'Arizona gunman' appears in court

Across the US, Americans observed a moment of silence on Monday for the victims of the shootings in Tucson, Arizona, in which six people were killed and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was gravely wounded.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama led the moment of silence from the rear of the White House.

At the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC, Ms Giffords' fellow members of Congress and hundreds of staff aides gathered on the steps of the US Capitol, which houses the legislature.

A nun led students in prayer in Phoenix, the state capital of Arizona, during the moment of silence. Later, Mr Obama urged Americans to offer their thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families.

Impromptu shrines, like this one at Ms Giffords' office in her Arizona constituency, have arisen across the country.

Among those killed was a nine-year-old girl, Christina Taylor Green. Mourners left flowers at Mesa Verde Elementary School, where she had recently been elected to the student council.
