麻豆社 Radio 2 Country presenter Bob Harris

Tonight's programme features a session from Oscar-winning songwriter Ryan Bingham, who was recently named Artist of the Year at the 2010 Americana Music Awards.

This has already been a life-changing year for the 29-year-old ex-rodeo rider. The Weary Kind, which he co-wrote with producer T Bone Burnett, has picked up several major awards this year, including a Golden Globe, an Oscar for best original song, and an Americana music award for Song of the Year. The song featured on the soundtrack of the 2009 film Crazy Heart, which won Jeff Bridges an Oscar for his portrayal of washed-up country star Bad Blake.

In tonight's session Ryan tells Bob Harris how he became involved in writing for Crazy Heart and his subsequent appearance in the film alongside his band The Dead Horses. Aside from his involvement with Crazy Heart, Ryan has just released his third album, Junky Star, which follows up last year's Roadhouse Sun.

Originally from a ranching family he spent his early life travelling between small towns on the Texan/Mexican border with his parents and, when only a teenager, set out on his own to become a rodeo rider: "Driving all night to ride a bull who'll knock your teeth out on every jump, then sleeping in the back of your truck in a dusty arena."

It was during this time that he started playing guitar, learning mariachi music from a neighbour in the Mexican border town where he lived. He took his guitar on the road with him as he travelled between rodeos, honing his songwriting and performance in local bars.

In 2005 he self-released his first CD, Wishbone Saloon, which earned him attention from fellow Texan songwriters Joe Ely and Terry Allen. In 2007 he signed to the Lost Highway label releasing his acclaimed major label debut, Mescalito.

He Belonged To Glasgow 鈥 The Will Fyffe Story

Thursday 4 November
11.30am-12.00noon 麻豆社 RADIO 4

Singer-songwriter Ricky Ross looks at the life and work of Scottish comedian and actor Will Fyffe.

Born in Dundee in 1885, Will Fyffe became synonymous with a different city with his song I Belong To Glasgow.

After spending his formative years in touring theatre, Will Fyffe switched to comedy and music hall, and became a headline act throughout Scotland. Along with his contemporary Harry Lauder, his humour transcended the regional stage and appearances all over Britain led to five Royal Variety performances.

A leading film star of the Thirties and Forties, Fyffe made one Hollywood film, but then put this burgeoning career on hold as war broke out and he returned to entertain the troops.

An accident in 1947 led to his untimely death, but his body of work lives on through his songs, sketches and films.

Contributors to the programme include Professor Jeffrey Richards and Will Fyffe's daughter, Eileen.

New series
Thursday 4 November
1.30-2.00pm 麻豆社 RADIO 4

Dominic Arkwright presents a new series of writing and provocative debate on Living Cheap to see if, with the country in debt, one can rediscover how to live on the cheap.

Dominic is joined by David Collins, Laurie Penny and Pauline Black who explain what living in tough times means for them.

David Collins is an actor who has found a medieval sounding solution to the big squeeze 鈥 an almshouse. Laurie Penny is a 23-year-old recent graduate who writes for free on her blog Penny Red. And Pauline Black, the lead singer of The Selector, resists the charge that it was her baby boomer generation that spent all the money and messed up the economy for everyone else.
