In session with Bob Harris is indie-folk duo The Civil Wars. Nashville-based John Paul White and Joy Williams released their debut album, Barton Hollow, earlier this year and have received wide critical acclaim for their sound, which fuses soaring anthemic pop melodies with sparse acoustic folk sensibilities.

They have recently been performing as part of Adele's European and US tour and are nominated in the 鈥渂est new and emerging artist鈥 category at this year's Americana Music Awards, which are held in Nashville in October.

Sounds Of The 20th Century Ep 26/50

Thursday 29 September
10.00-11.00pm 麻豆社 RADIO 2

Jeremy Vine passes the midway point in 麻豆社 Radio 2's audio journey through five decades of triumph, tragedy and trivia, and reaches 1976.

This was the year of the great drought, the American Bicentennial, Denis Healey and Jimmy Carter. The music is what they called AOR (album oriented rock) 鈥 Joan Armatrading, the Eagles and Peter Frampton 鈥 but there are some noisy new kids on the block in the shape of The Damned and the Sex Pistols.

Patrick Stewart stars as Raymond Chandler in Strangers on A Film

Patrick Stewart is Raymond Chandler and Clive Swift is Alfred Hitchcock in this drama about their famous collaboration on Strangers On A Train.

In 1950, Alfred Hitchcock invited Raymond Chandler to work with him on a screenplay based on Patricia Highsmith's novel. Chandler was not only recognised as a fine novelist but had also received an Academy Award nomination for his original screenplay The Blue Dahlia. The omens were good but their collaboration turned out to be a disaster.

Today's Afternoon Play, Strangers On A Film by Stephen Wyatt, accompanies the second part of the Classic Chandler season which starts on 麻豆社 Radio 4 on Saturday 1 October with The Long Goodbye.
