An Litir Bheag 446
Seo agaibh sgeulachd eile 脿 Siabost ann an taobh siar Le貌dhais. 鈥橲 e an t-ainm a tha oirre E貌ghann na Mara.
Bha E貌ghann a鈥 fuireach faisg air a鈥 chladach. Latha a bha seo, chaidh e gu bonn geodha. Chunnaic e boireannach. Bha a c霉l ris. Bha falt fada aice. Ri a taobh, air clach, bha se貌rsa de dh鈥檃odach. Bha earball-猫isg agus itean-猫isg air an aodach Thuig E貌ghann gum b鈥 e seo maighdeann-mhara.
Chuala a鈥 mhaighdeann cas-cheum an duine. Dh鈥檉heuch i ri a h-aodach a thogail. Ach bha E貌ghann ro luath. Thog esan an t-aodach. Choimhead e air a鈥 mhaighdinn. 鈥楥貌 thu agus d猫 an gnothach a tha agad an seo?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich e.
鈥業s mise banrigh an aiginn,鈥 thuirt i. 鈥楾hoir dhomh m鈥 aodach.鈥
鈥楢 bhanrigh,鈥 thuirt E貌ghann, 鈥榯ha mi airson faighinn a-mach 鈥 an t脿inig sibh an seo mar rabhadh dhuinn?鈥
鈥楾ha mac-an-duine dhen bheachd gun tig mo leithid mar rabhadh gun tig sgrios,鈥 thuirt a鈥 mhaighdeann-mhara. 鈥楢ch 鈥檚 e r矛gh an aiginn a n矛 an sgrios. Chan urrainn do mhaighdeann-mhara ach rabhadh a thoirt do mhac-an-duine gu bheil sgrios a鈥 tighinn. Tha sinn a鈥 d猫anamh sin oir tha gr脿dh聽againn do mhac-an-duine.鈥 Thuirt聽E貌ghann nach canadh e a-rithist gur e聽droch chreutairean a bha sna聽maighdeannan-mara.
鈥楾ha mi toilichte sin a chluinntinn,鈥櫬爐huirt a鈥 mhaighdeann-mhara.聽鈥楢gus bheir mi duais dhut. Aig a鈥櫬爂healaich 霉ir gach m矛os, tr脿th sa聽mhadainn, thig gu mullach a鈥櫬燽hearraidh seo. Gheibh thu iasg m貌r.聽Cumaidh sin biadh ri do theaghlach.聽Ach chan fhaod thu seo innse do dhuine聽sam bith gus am bi thu seachad air聽ochdad bliadhna a dh鈥檃ois.鈥

The Little Letter 446
Here鈥檚 another story from Shawbost in the west of Lewis. It鈥檚 called 鈥楬ugh/Ewan of the Sea鈥.Hugh was living near the shore. One day, he went to the bottom of a geo (an inlet with steep sides). He saw a woman. Her back was to him. She had long hair. By her side, on the top of a stone, there was sort of clothing. The clothing had a fish tail and fish fins. Hugh understood that this was a mermaid.
The mermaid heard the man鈥檚 footstep. She tried to pick up her clothes. But Hugh was too quick. He picked up the clothes. He looked at the mermaid. 鈥榃ho are you and what business do you have here?鈥 he asked.
鈥業 am the queen of the deep,鈥 she said. 鈥楪ive me my clothes.鈥
鈥楺ueen,鈥 said Hugh, 鈥業 want to find out 鈥 did you come here as a warning to us?鈥
鈥楬umans think that my like comes as a warning of destruction,鈥 said the mermaid. 鈥楤ut it鈥檚 the king of the deep that does the destruction. A mermaid can only warn humans that destruction is on the way. We do that because we love humans.鈥 Hugh said that he would never again say聽that the mermaids were bad聽creatures.
鈥業鈥檓 pleased to hear that,鈥 said聽the mermaid, 鈥楢nd I鈥檒l give you a聽reward. At the new moon every聽month, early in the morning, come to聽the top of this cliff. You鈥檒l get a lot of聽fish. That will keep your family in聽food. But you mustn鈥檛 tell this to聽anybody until you are over eighty聽years of age.鈥
With that, she put on her聽clothes. She returned to the sea.聽And, as she promised, so it聽happened. Hugh was famous as a聽鈥榝isherman鈥. Until he was eighty聽years old, his family was never short聽of fish.
When he was eighty, Hugh told聽his family about the mermaid. At the聽next new moon, there was no fish at聽the top of the cliff. And Hugh died聽three months later.
