An Litir Bheag 454

Bha Calum Cille air leth comasach ann a bhith a鈥 fosgladh dhorsan a bha glaiste. Bha e ann an 脠irinn turas. Chaidh e a ch猫ilidh air manaich ann am manachainn ann am meadhan na d霉thcha. Nuair a chaidh e ann, bha iuchair a鈥 chaibeil air chall. Bha na manaich gu math m矛-thoilichte mu dheidhinn.

Chaidh Calum Cille gu doras a鈥 chaibeil. Thuirt e, 鈥業s urrainn don Tighearna, 脿s aonais iuchair, doras a thaigh fh猫in fhosgladh do a shearbhantan.鈥 Le sin, dh鈥檉hosgail an doras leis fh猫in.Tha an st貌iridh sin a鈥 nochdadh ann an Vita Columbae, eachdraidh Chaluim Chille.聽
Anns a鈥 chaibideil a leanas air sin, tha d猫irceach bochd 脿 Loch Abar. Chaidh e a Chalum Cille, ag iarraidh d猫irc. Thug Calum Cille dha na bha aige de dh猫irc. An uair sin thuirt e, 鈥楢 dhuine bhochd, faigh slat bhon choille a tha faisg oirnn agus thoir i dhomh.鈥 Chaidh an duine bochd don choille agus fhuair e slat. Thug e do Chalum Cille i.

Rinn Calum Cille aon cheann dhen t-slait biorach. Bheannaich e an t-slat. 鈥楪l猫idh an t-slat seo le c霉ram,鈥 thuirt e. 鈥楳a n矛 thu sin, tha mi a鈥 creidsinn nach d猫an i cron air daoine no crodh, ach gun d猫an i cron a-mh脿in air聽fiadh-bheatha agus 猫isg. Cho fad 鈥檚 a聽ghleidheas tu an t-slat seo, cha bhi聽gainnead de shitheann anns an taigh聽agad.鈥櫬

Dh鈥檉halbh an d猫irceach dhachaigh聽ann an deagh shunnd. Chaidh e a-mach聽don choille. Chuir e an t-slat bhiorach聽mar stob anns a鈥 choille. Bha an ceann聽biorach a鈥 stobadh an-脿irde. Dh鈥檉h脿g e聽mar sin i fad na h-oidhche. An ath聽mhadainn, thill e. Bha damh m貌r air聽tuiteam air an stob. Bha an damh marbh.聽Bha fe貌il gu le貌r aig a theaghlach an聽latha sin.聽
Lean gnothaichean mar sin fad聽霉ine mh貌r. Gach latha bha damh no eilid聽no earba marbh air ceann biorach an聽stuib. Nuair a bha a theaghlach s脿saichte聽le fe貌il, bha am fear bochd a鈥 reic a鈥櫬燾h貌rr do a choimhearsnaich.聽
Gu m矛-fhortanach, ge-t脿, cha do聽lean c霉isean mar sin gu s矛orraidh.聽Innsidh mi dhuibh d猫 thachair don聽d猫irceach Abrach an-ath-sheachdain.

The Little Letter 454

St Columba was amazingly able to open doors that were locked. He was in Ireland one time. He went to visit monks in a monastery in the middle of the country. When he went there, the key to the chapel was missing. The monks were very unhappy about it.

Columba went to the chapel door. He said, 鈥楾he Lord, without a key, can open the door of his own house to his servants.鈥 With that, the door opened by itself.

That story appears in Vita Columbae, the story of Columba. In the following chapter, there is a poor beggar from Lochaber. He went to Columba, requesting alms. Columba gave him all the alms he had. Then he said, 鈥楶oor man, get a stake from the wood that is nearby and give it to me.鈥 The poor man went to the wood and he got a stake. He gave it to Columba.

Columba sharpened one end of the stake. He blessed the stake. 鈥楰eep this stake safe,鈥 he said. 鈥業f you do that, I believe it will do no harm to men or cattle, but it will only harm wild animals and fish.聽As long as you keep this stake,聽you will never want for venison in聽your house.鈥

The beggar went home in a聽good mood. He went out to the聽wood. He put the sharpened stake聽sticking out of the ground in the聽wood. The sharp end was sticking聽up. He left it there all night. Next聽morning, he returned. A large聽stag had fallen on the stake. The聽stag was dead. His family had聽enough meat that day.

Matters continued like that聽for a long time. Each day there聽was a stag or hind [red deer] or聽roe deer dead on the sharp end of聽the stake. When his family had聽had enough meat, the poor man聽was selling the rest to his聽neighbours.

Unfortunately, however,聽matters didn鈥檛 continue like that聽forever. I鈥檒l tell you what聽happened to the beggar from聽Lochaber next week.
