Translating for Mum and Dad
Dr Humera Iqbal explores the unique lives and experiences faced by British teenagers and children whose parents do not speak English.
Psychologist and academic Dr Humera Iqbal's research at University College London is all about migrant kids, who do vital unpaid translating work for their families. This is because they鈥檙e often able to pick up English more quickly than their parents. There are thousands of children like them in the UK, translating in crucial places like at the doctors or in banks. But we just don鈥檛 notice them 鈥 they鈥檙e invisible 鈥 doing adult tasks 鈥 and navigating the lives of their families. It really does create a role-reversal in the parent-child dynamic. We follow them as they go about their extraordinary lives.
