Stories from Scotland's Sea: The RNLI at 200

As the RNLI celebrates its 200th birthday Cat Cubie shares some of Scotland鈥檚 stories from the RNLI鈥檚 鈥200 Voices鈥 archive.

With the RNLI reaching a remarkable 200 year milestone this year, Cat Cubie shares some of Scotland鈥檚 stories from the RNLI鈥檚 鈥200 Voices鈥 archive. From the heroic to the heartwarming, the fun to the frightening, we鈥檒l hear about volunteers from around Scotland鈥檚 coasts and the people (sometimes even the pets) they鈥檝e saved.

Cat鈥檚 own memories of the RNLI go back to early childhood when she鈥檇 visit stations with her dad, who鈥檚 been involved in the RNLI for 55 years. She was always in awe of the crew and how much they鈥檇 risk keeping the seas safe.

Since it started, the RNLI has saved some 146,000 lives around the UK, nearly 12,000 in Scotland alone. At the heart of this second episode is the unfolding story of how Ben Thompson and his friend were rescued when a jet-ski trip nearly ended in tragedy. For former volunteer Dan Holland it鈥檚 the story of the emotional impact of realising you鈥檝e saved someone鈥檚 life which stays with him while Vic Sutherland focuses on the lives lost from within the crews, in particular from Fraserburgh Lifeboat Station. Anne Scott and Doug Grant share how RNLI volunteering is woven through many volunteers鈥 family histories, decades of dedication to the cause, while for Rose Skelton being part of the RNLI family was so important to her, she ended up answering a shout on her wedding day.

Touching, heroic, sad and sensational, join us as we celebrate 200 years of this iconic institution.
