Takeaway by Angela Hui (Omnibus)
Angela Hui remembers growing up at the counter of her parents鈥 Chinese takeaway in Wales. Read by Priya Hall.
Angela Hui recalls growing up at the counter of her parents鈥 鈥楲ucky Star鈥 Chinese takeaway in the former mining village of Beddau, Wales.
Food is both work and pleasure for the Hui family.
The takeaway opened on the luckiest day of the century 鈥 08/08/1988 - an auspicious date with the number eight signifying good wealth, fortune and prosperity in Chinese culture 鈥 three key factors needed for a young, growing immigrant family.
On one side of the counter Angela interacts with the takeaway鈥檚 loyal staff, Cecilia, Dewi and Lowri.
On the other side, she enjoys family dinners before service - dishes a world away from the simplified, watered-down Western version ordered by the locals. To the Huis, food is love and symbolises family.
A blending of her Welsh and Chinese heritage, the takeaway was a place that embodied the dual identities that Angela herself was experiencing.
Omnibus of five-parts abridged by Anna Magnusson.
