We join the centre for a traditional puja, a devotional practice that includes prayers, chants and mantras in Tibetan. The puja aims to develop an enlightened vision of the world. It is a form of meditation accompanied by intense visualisation that cultivates mindfulness, compassion and wisdom.
This puja is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche or Precious Teacher, a Buddhist master from the 8th century, who is considered the Second Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism and is known as one who removes obstacles. He is said to have been born from a lotus flower.
Prayers to Guru Rinpoche are considered to be increasingly potent during difficult times, and he is often invoked for protection. The puja practice helps to avert spiritual obstacles and pacifies all negativity on the path to enlightenment. It emphasises the interdependence of all things and is dedicated to the benefit of all beings. The prayers, chants and mantras are from a sacred Tibetan text known as the Embodiment of the Jewels.
The Palpung Changchub Dargyeling centre is housed in an old Baptist chapel in Brynmawr, the highest town in Wales. It belongs to the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
