Children of the Blitz

During the Blitz, over two million British children were not evacuated, instead staying at home in towns and cities at risk of being bombed. Now, the survivors of the bombings tell their stories.

From September 1940 to May 1941, during the Second World War, over 35,000 tonnes of bombs and incendiaries were dropped on towns and cities across the UK during the infamous Luftwaffe aerial bombing campaign that became known as the Blitz.

Just before the outbreak of war, the British government鈥檚 Operation Pied Piper put plans in place to evacuate millions of children, but only 800,000 left towns and cities that were vulnerable to attack. These are the stories of some of the two million children who stayed at home, often to help their families or because their parents couldn鈥檛 bear to send them away.

This documentary features some of the last people who witnessed the reality of the Blitz, with their testimony offering an intimate, enlightening and moving portrait of wartime Britain through children鈥檚 eyes.
