Stone Strong

Jamie McGregor and the passionate community helping to revive Scotland’s ancient tradition of stone lifting.

Jamie McGregor and the passionate community helping to revive Scotland’s ancient tradition of stone lifting.

Once used as a test of strength, stone lifting is being reimagined for modern Scotland. Open to everyone – women and men, seasoned athletes and complete beginners alike – it has become a small but fiercely supportive community. The challenge is physical, but the reward is deeply emotional.

One of the country’s most experienced stone lifters, Jamie is a prison officer, former Strongman competitor and tireless advocate for the sport. During a packed few months, he heads out on stone-lifting tours through Perthshire and Iceland, places a new lifting stone on an ancient Highland coffin road, celebrates his 50th birthday, and prepares to marry his fiancee Gail – affectionately known as his 'stone wife' – who has supported him throughout his stone-lifting journey. Along the way, we meet the fun and colourful characters who make up this close-knit 'stone family'.

A warm and uplifting portrait of strength, community and heritage, this documentary explores how an ancient test of power is finding new life in the modern world.
