The Last Miner in the Band

Former miner Peter is the heart of Durham鈥檚 Easington Colliery Band. Seventy-five years ago, the band united the community after a pit disaster. But now there are concerns for its future.

Former miner Peter Lawson is the beating heart of Durham鈥檚 Easington Colliery Band. He joined the band at 11 and has worked tirelessly for 55 years to keep it going. From managing the band, to moving equipment and raising money with a band cafe, the list is endless. His dedication has seen the band grow and in 2024 win the North of England Championships. Last year, they also performed with music legend Sam Fender.

Seventy-five years ago, the mining community suffered one of the north east鈥檚 worst pit disasters. The band united the community and played at every one of funerals of the 83 men that died. To mark the anniversary, the band is preparing for their biggest concert at Durham Cathedral. Teacher Dan is busy recruiting new band members to play, and local children are rehearsing their contribution, A Miner鈥檚 Song, so that it can be ready for the concert.

But with Peter unwell with what could be a serious condition, and Dan and Georgia expecting a baby the week of the concert, will the key members of the band be there? And if Peter retires, what happens to the band?

Will the next generation step up to the challenge?
