Minor Swing
Growing up Willem listened to his mum鈥檚 endless violin practice of Minor Swing, hating it on various levels until he found out about jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli.
Growing up Willem heard his mother play the music of St茅phane Grappelli with her band Hot Club Du Nord. Being a jazz violinist she would practice daily, however this routine gradually caused Willem frustration. He became exhausted with his mother鈥檚 playing and felt abandoned when she would perform.
At 22 Willem has decided to learn more about St茅phane Grappelli and his music due to its importance to his mother. Follow Willem as he learns about the story of St茅phane Grappelli, his life and the joie de vivre of his music.
This series of New Storytellers is presenting the winners of the Charles Parker Prize for the Best Student Radio Feature 2026. This award-winning feature was produced by Willem Fisk-Nicholson, a student Media Production student at the University of Sunderland. According to the judges his feature was 鈥淎 lovely idea for a feature about hating the constant intrusion of music being practiced in the family home鈥, 鈥淥ne of those 鈥榬oom to breathe鈥 pieces that got me thinking about how much we take for granted as children and how it pays to re-evaluate things from time to time鈥, 鈥渨ith a great, lively narration, all in all a lovely, informative listen.鈥
