3. Sheep's Clothing

By mid-war, the Cambridge spies are fully embedded in their double lives and holding comfortable jobs deep within the British establishment. In Poland the story is very different.

Stalin鈥檚 Apostles is a radical, new look at how the treachery of the spies in the Cambridge Five 鈥 Donald Maclean, Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, John Cairncross and Anthony Blunt - contributed to the building of Stalin鈥檚 鈥楻ed Empire鈥. It explores how they allowed their obsession with Communist ideology to overshadow any sense of morality and decency as they fed Stalin with secrets over a period of 17 years. Using recently declassified files, the book focuses particularly on the fate of the people of eastern and central Europe who were caught behind the Iron Curtain.

It's now mid-war and the spies are comfortably embedded deep within the British establishment. The Polish however are on the frontline of Stalin's ruthless ambition and their lives are far from comfortable.
