African leaders have approved plans to deploy a regional intervention force to South Sudan.

Their deployment aims to end fighting which continues to hamper a peace agreement between President Salva Kiir and first Vice President Riek Machar.

A 12,000-strong UN peacekeeping force is already in place in South Sudan. Soldiers for the AU force are to come from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan and Uganda.
