What are the risks of taking the contraceptive pill?
Women have to 鈥渨eigh up the risks and the benefits鈥 of the combined contraceptive pill, says Dr Sarah Jarvis.
Speaking to 5 live鈥檚 Phil Williams, Dr Jarvis said that taking any kind of estrogen 鈥渄oes increase your levels of clotting鈥 and up to 30 out of 100 thousand people on 鈥渟ome kinds of the pill鈥 will get a pulmonary embolism - a clot on the leg which travels to and lodges in the lung.
She said the condition will only affect around 25 to 30 out of a thousand women on 鈥渟ome kinds of the pill.鈥
Her comments come after a coroner has concluded 23-year-old Charlotte Foster died from the untreated side effects of the combined contraceptive pill.
