Shirley Chisholm in 1972: the first black US presidential nominee
The first woman to run for US president did so in 1872, before women there could vote legally. One hundred years later, the first black woman to run for president was Shirley Chisholm. At the time she said, "Being female put many more obstacles in my path than being black."
