Meaza Ashenafi elected as the first woman to head Ethiopia's federal supreme court
Prominent human rights lawyer Meaza Ashenafi has been elected as the first woman to head Ethiopia's federal supreme court.
She is famous for championing the rights of women and girls. She was even the subject of a film called Difret, produced by Angelina Jolie, in which she defends a young rural girl who kills the man who kidnapped and tried to marry her.
Her name was put forward by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and MPs unanimously approved the appointment. It's the latest in a series of appointments in Ethiopia that has seen the promotion of women to top jobs.
She told the 麻豆社's Paul Bakibinga that she had initially been approached for the role two weeks ago.
