The play marking 25 years since the end of apartheid

Two South African theatre legends are setting the stage alight in London's West end at the moment. The director, John Kani and Anthony Sher are captivating audiences with a performance marking 25 years since the end of apartheid, called Kunene and the King.

Anthony Sher plays Jack Morris, a terminally ill 65-year-old white actor living a relatively comfortable life in the suburbs of Johannesburg, and John Kani plays Lunga Kunene, a 69-year-old black male nurse working as his carer. Despite their differences, they are brought together by their love of Shakespeare.

The actors, like the characters they play, have lived through apartheid so both bring that reality to their performances. Focus on Africa’s Paul Bakibinga asked them how the project started.
