Malawi police must compensate rape victims
The High Court in Lilongwe has ordered Malawian police to pay compensation to 18 women and girls who were raped and sexually assaulted by officers last October. Police have been accused of exacting revenge, after an officer was killed during anti-government protests following Peter Mutharika's re-election in 2019. The result of that vote was eventually overturned. Tadala Chinkwezule, president of the Women Lawyers Association of Malawi, tells Focus on Africa what the verdict means.
