“Before the electricity, we were using kerosene lamps”
Focus on Africa’s Veronique Edwards speaks to Bori Amri Bori from Matipwili in Tanzania, to learn how renewable energy “minigrid” power is benefitting his community, and also speaks to Manoj Sinha. He’s the CEO of Husk Power, the company providing the service.
The technology allows electricity to be delivered to places which aren’t connected to the national power grid. Bori says it makes it much easier for students to study after dark, while businesses in his community can sell cold drinks for the first time.
Manoj Sinha explains that the concept behind his business is decentralised power generation and distribution, to allow rural communities to benefit from electricity.
