Africa’s ‘unique’ surfing culture
Focus on Africa’s Audrey Brown speaks to Andy Davis, a former surf guide and publisher of the new book Afrosurf, written by the Mami Wata collective and Selema Masekela. He says the first ever written account of surfing took place in Ghana, and discusses the history and evolution of the sport in the African context. Surfing made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, with athletes from two African nations, South Africa and Tunisia, taking part.
