Nigeria's security crisis continues to escalate as hundreds of inmates escaped from a prison after it was raided by suspected Boko Haram militants, and in a separate incident an advance convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari was attacked as it made its way to his home state, Katsina, in the north. The president was not present.

Almost every part of Nigeria is facing a security crisis - from kidnapping to extremist insurgencies. But a government spokesperson has said that people are largely uninformed about the state of insecurity in the country and has blamed "fake news". It is a stance that shows "a disconnect" between the government and citizens, according to Nigerian security analyst Dr Kabir Adamu. He says the majority of Nigerians are feeling insecure and the frequency of attacks and numbers of fatalities, are concerning.
